MOSTA IN WARTIME by Tony C. Cutajar

Our young people – and even those not so young and their parents – know very little about the hideous effects of the Second World War and what our grandparents had been through. In this story we’re going to meet a Mosta family and the experiences they and the rest of the people of this village went through: continuous air raids, life in the shelters, death and destruction, sacrifices and bravery, food rations, victory kitchens, the Santa Marija convoy, and eventually victory celebrations. All this was endured by all the people of Malta and Gozo, but those of Mosta had much more than a fair share of them for various reasons.

ELEPHANT’S TOOTH by Tony Cutajar

In Alley No. 2 in Main Street lived a number of families with children of all ages. Two of the older ones were rather lively who often caused trouble in the alley, in their family and at school. But the father of another two children tried his best to help in keeping unity and friendship by organising a lot of activities. He celebrated with them the village feast, Carnival and Christmas and took them on hikes. On one of these hikes he encouraged them to look for prehistoric remains in a place which looked like Għar Dalam. The imagination of these youths ran rampant and in the following days they spent hours digging and searching until they managed to find pieces of ancient pottery and even an elephant’s tooth. But were these genuine?

The second Maltese version of this book IL-WIED TA’ GĦAR MAGĦLAQ was used as a class reader at St. Aloysius College.
